Antiqu Sterling Souvenir Spoon Lachine Rapids CPR Bridge Montreal Canada Hemsley

$ 20.59

Availability: 100 in stock
  • Condition: This is being sold as is/as found out of a home, in its medium dark gray tarnished condition, we have not attempted to polish this antique piece (as some prefer these in as found condition) and don't know how it would polish up. There is a very tiny line/hairline, less than 1/16 inch in length, on the backside of the spoon end where the crown meets the stem which you can feel with your fingernail (see last image). This is only barely visible on the frontside at the end or the side of the spoon here. There are no other cracks, chips or bends to the spoon or large flaws that we see. Due to perhaps the tarnishing, there are some dark round spots on the spoon bowl and stem backside and the general dark tarnished look throughout. There are fine scratch lines likely from years of polishing (given the age) and likely other expected light wear from being handled, sitting on display, etc. over the years, but nothing out of the ordinary or that detracts.

    Description

    Antique souvenir sterling silver spoon believed to date from early 1900s from research explained below,
    but don't know for certain,
    .  There is no engraved date or monogram on this spoon.  Word "Sterling" imprinted (rather than 925) on backside top stem, along with "R. Hemsley", a Canadian company from Montreal, Quebec from 1870 through about 1970, which may have ceased making sterling silver items around 1930 from some internet research, but we don't know.  Please see images 11 & 12 included.
    This vintage collectible souvenir spoon has raised markings for "Lachine Rapids" and "C. P. R. Bridge, Montreal".  On the bowl of the spoon is a raised graphic of an old style steam boat on water rapids with Lachine Rapids marked underneath.  The Lachine Rapids are on the St. Lawrence River in Canada (CA), near the city of Lachine, from some internet research.  On the stem of the spoon is a raised graphic of a bridge with CPR Bridge (Canadian Pacific Railway), Montreal shown underneath.  Our research suggests that this bridge may be what is now called the Saint-Laurent Railway Bridge, reconstructed between 1910 and 1913 while the old bridge was still in service (originally built 1885-1887).  The end of the spoon has a raised crown design.
    Antique sterling spoon measures about 4 1/2 inches in length, 7/8 inch greatest width to the oval spoon, about 3/8 inch greatest width to the spoon stem design, sitting about 7/16 inch greatest depth/height at the upward spoon  bowl tip.  We would call this spoon size a demitasse spoon or coffee spoon.  Weighs about .43 troy ounces or 13.4 grams.  This will be shipped in a small box for safety.
