Back in 1898 when Louis Renault built his first Voiturette, his maiden effort was a rear-wheel drive vehicle. Indeed, the only thing with front-wheel drive in those days had a horse attached to it
Since 1898, we’ve made more rear-wheel drive cars than we can count. We are an old company and a big company and we know rear-wheel drive like we know the back of pur hand.
Sixty years after our first car, we produced our first front-wheel drive car. We got better traction on slick
roads. Better control. Better road holding. Better stability in cross winds. Better space utilization.
Today we are the largest producers of front-wheel drive cars in the world. Over 5000 a day, over 1,000,000 a year.
The new Renault 12.
Everything we know about making cars in general, and making FWD in particular, is beautifully married in the Renault 12. No half pint, it is 7” longer than the Pinto. Its appearance speaks for itself.
It gets up to 30 mpg, moves out at a snappy top speed of 93 mph, and stops straight and true, thanks to its front-wheel disc brakes. Its tough, efficient engine is essentially the same engine that took 1, 2, and 3 at the 1971 Monte Carlo Rally, as well as The
World Championship Rally Crown.
The handling, because of FWD and the precise response of rack-and-pinion steering, is superb. Inside there’s plenty of leg room to go around. The trunk offers a whopping 12.8 cubic feet. If you need even more trunk, the Renault 12 Station Wagon offers up to 58 cubic feet.
